Everybody Communicates. But Few Connect.

Everybody Communicates. But Few Connect.

By Coach PBJ

I stayed silent for four months.

Not because I did not have anything to say.

Because I had learned that in that room, staying quiet was safer than speaking up.

And the silence was costing me more than speaking ever could.

The Room Nobody Talked About

I was in a senior leadership meeting.

The manager gave directives. She was clear in her own mind about what she wanted. She spoke with authority and confidence and when she finished the room responded the way it always did.

Everyone nodded.

Everyone said okay.

And everyone went back to their desks with absolutely no idea what the assignment actually was.

I looked around that room and realized I was not alone in my confusion. Not one person in that meeting had understood what we had just been asked to do.

So after the manager left I asked the question I thought someone else would ask first.

What is the assignment? What are we actually being asked to do?

And the answer I got stopped me cold.

They said, we don't ask questions. She doesn't like it when you challenge her or ask her to clarify.

So for four months we kept coming to the table with what we thought she wanted. And every single time it was wrong. Every single time she looked at what we brought and said that was not it. And not one person in that room could tell her what it actually was because she had never been clear enough for anyone to know.

Finally I could not hold my silence any longer.

I looked at her directly and said nobody in this room is clear on what you are asking for.

And then I offered two options based on everything we had discussed.

She looked at one of the other managers and asked, what is it that I want?

And that manager finally told the truth.

I don't know.

The assignment was tabled that day. We never revisited it. And four months of our time, our energy, and our expertise had been spent walking around in the dark because one person could not communicate clearly and an entire room of gifted people had been too afraid to say so.

Everybody Communicates. But Few Connect.

Here is what I learned in that room.

There is a difference between talking and connecting.

That manager talked. She talked a lot. She filled rooms with words and directives and authority. But not one word she said connected. Not one directive landed clearly enough for anyone to act on it with confidence.

Communication without connection is just noise.

And when a leader creates a culture where people cannot ask questions, cannot admit confusion, cannot challenge or clarify without fear of consequence, that leader is not leading.

They are performing.

And performance without connection costs everyone in the room.

It costs time. It costs energy. It costs the kind of momentum that only comes when a team actually understands where they are going and why.

Four months. Gone.

Because nobody felt safe enough to say I don't understand.

The Woman Who Stays Silent

I want to talk to the woman who was in that room with me.

Not the manager. The woman sitting at the table nodding along with everyone else.

The one who did not understand the assignment but said okay anyway.

The one who went back to her desk and tried to figure it out on her own rather than risk being the one who asked the wrong question.

I know her well. Because I sat next to her for four months before I finally broke.

And I want to ask her something directly.

How much of your precious time have you spent walking around in the dark because speaking up felt more dangerous than staying confused?

How many meetings have you left nodding when you should have been asking?

How many assignments have you struggled through alone because you decided it was safer to figure it out yourself than to admit you needed clarification?

This is not just a workplace pattern.

This is a shadow.

The woman who stays silent in that meeting is the same woman who says yes when she means no. Who apologizes for her needs. Who reads the room before she speaks and decides it is safer to shrink than to risk taking up too much space.

She has been managing herself to fit the room for so long that she does not even notice she is doing it anymore.

And it is costing her more than she realizes.

What Insecure Leadership Costs You

I want to name something that does not get said enough.

When leadership creates a culture of fear, the people who pay the highest price are not the ones who are afraid to speak.

They are the ones who are gifted enough to know what needs to be said but have learned that saying it comes at a cost.

That is a specific kind of exhaustion.

Sitting in a room full of confusion that you could resolve in five minutes if anyone would just create the space for an honest conversation. Watching time and resources disappear into a problem that does not need to exist. Carrying the weight of knowing and staying silent anyway because the culture says silence is safer.

That is not leadership. That is a cage.

And you were not built for a cage.

Use Your Voice

I want to give you permission to do something that might feel uncomfortable.

Speak up.

Not with aggression. Not with an agenda. But with the quiet confidence of a woman who knows that her voice, her clarity, her willingness to say what the room is thinking but nobody is saying, is not a liability.

It is a gift.

The four months we lost in that room did not have to be lost. One honest question asked earlier could have saved all of it. But everyone was waiting for someone else to go first.

Be the one who goes first.

Not because you are not afraid. But because staying silent is costing you more than speaking ever could.

Your time is precious. Your clarity is an asset. And the room needs what you carry even when the culture has not yet made it safe to share it.

Use your voice anyway.

Because the woman who needs your clarity is sitting in that room waiting for someone to say what she has been too afraid to say herself.

And that someone is you.

The Shadow Work

Here is what I want you to sit with.

Where in your life are you staying silent because speaking up feels more dangerous than staying confused?

What is that silence actually costing you?

And what would change if you decided that your voice mattered enough to use it even when the room made it feel unsafe?

Sit with that.

And when you are ready to go deeper, I would love to walk with you. Book a free Shadow Discovery Call and let's talk about what your silence has been costing you and what becomes possible when you finally speak.
