Jezebel: The Shadow of Control

Scripture

1 Kings 21:1-16

When most people hear the name Jezebel, they immediately think of an evil woman. Her name has become synonymous with manipulation, seduction, and wickedness. Yet if we stop there, we may miss some of the deeper lessons hidden within her story.

Jezebel was a queen, the wife of King Ahab. She was intelligent, influential, strategic, and powerful. She knew how to get things done. The problem was not her strength. The problem was how she used it.

One of the clearest examples appears in the story of Naboth’s vineyard. King Ahab desired a vineyard that belonged to Naboth, but Naboth refused to sell it because it was part of his family inheritance. Ahab returned home angry, disappointed, and pouting.

Rather than encouraging her husband to accept the answer, Jezebel took matters into her own hands.

She arranged false accusations against Naboth, manipulated the legal system, and orchestrated events that led to his death. Once Naboth was gone, Ahab took possession of the vineyard.

Jezebel was unwilling to accept what she could not control.

Instead of trusting God’s boundaries, she forced the outcome she wanted.

The Shadow

The shadow we see most clearly in Jezebel’s story is the shadow of control.

Control often disguises itself as strength, leadership, responsibility, or simply “getting things done.” At its root, however, control is frequently fueled by fear. Fear of losing. Fear of rejection. Fear of uncertainty. Fear that things will not work out unless we make them happen.

Jezebel believed she could create the outcome she wanted if she exerted enough influence and pressure. Many of us have fallen into the same trap.

Most women are not plotting against prophets or stealing vineyards. Yet the shadow of control shows up every day. It appears when we try to manage everyone’s emotions. When we attempt to control how people see us. When we refuse to delegate because we think nobody can do it as well as we can. When we manipulate conversations to get the response we want. When we push doors open that God has not opened. When we try to rescue people who are not ready to be rescued.

Many high-performing women know this shadow well.

We become the fixer.

The planner.

The rescuer.

The problem solver.

The strong one.

Over time, carrying everything can create the illusion that we must control everything. The result is exhaustion, frustration, and anxiety.

Jezebel’s story reminds us that strength without surrender can become dangerous. Influence without integrity can become manipulation. Leadership without humility can become control.

God never called us to control outcomes. He called us to trust Him.

There is a difference between being responsible and being controlling. One flows from wisdom. The other flows from fear.

Coach PBJ’s Final Thoughts

As I reflect on Jezebel, I do not simply see a wicked woman. I see what can happen when unhealed shadows are allowed to drive our decisions. The reality is that many of us have a little Jezebel hiding in places we would rather not admit.

Not because we are evil. But because life has taught us that if we do not take control, we may get hurt, disappointed, overlooked, or rejected.

The problem is that control can never create true peace. Control creates pressure. Trust creates peace.

One of the hardest lessons I have had to learn is that everything is not my responsibility. People have free will. Life is unpredictable. And some outcomes belong to God alone.

Shadow work invites us to ask a difficult question:

What am I trying to control that I was never meant to carry?

Sometimes healing begins the moment we loosen our grip.

Call to Action

Take a moment to reflect.

Where in your life are you forcing instead of trusting?

Where are you carrying responsibility that belongs to someone else?

Where has control become a substitute for faith?

If this message speaks to you, share it with another woman who may be carrying more than she was ever designed to carry.

The journey from shadows to shine begins with awareness.
