Mary Magdalene: The Shadow of Labels
Mary Magdalene: The Shadow of Labels
Mary Magdalene is one of the most misunderstood women in the Bible. Many people know her by the labels that have been attached to her story over the centuries, yet Scripture paints a much more powerful picture. Luke tells us that Jesus delivered her from seven demons, and from that moment forward, Mary became one of His most faithful followers. She traveled with Him, supported His ministry, stood near the cross when many others fled, and was present at His tomb after His crucifixion.
What is remarkable about Mary’s story is not where she started, but where she ended up. The woman once known for her bondage became one of the most devoted disciples of Jesus. While others abandoned Him in His darkest hour, Mary remained. Her loyalty was not rooted in obligation. It was rooted in gratitude. She never forgot what Jesus had done for her.
The shadow in Mary’s story is the shadow of labels. Sometimes the greatest struggle is not what we have been through, but what people continue to call us after we have changed. Many women know what it feels like to outgrow a season, only to have others keep introducing them by their past. They remember who you were when you were broken, but struggle to accept who you have become through healing.

Labels can become prisons if we allow them to define us. The enemy loves to convince us that our worst moment is our permanent identity. He wants us to believe that because we were wounded, we are damaged. Because we failed, we are failures. Because we struggled, we are unworthy. Mary’s life challenges that lie. Her story reminds us that deliverance is not just about being set free from something. It is about being free to become someone new.
Many modern women are carrying labels they never asked for. Divorced. Single mother. Addict. Abused. Rejected. Too much. Not enough. Difficult. Broken. Some of those labels were given by others. Some were created in the privacy of their own minds. Either way, the result is the same. The label becomes louder than their identity.
Mary teaches us that healing begins when we stop introducing ourselves by our wounds and start identifying ourselves by what God says about us. Her life proves that your history may explain you, but it does not have to define you. The same woman who was once known for her bondage became the first person entrusted to announce the resurrection of Jesus. God did not allow her past to disqualify her from her purpose.
Coach PBJ’s Final Thoughts

Mary Magdalene’s story is a reminder that people may remember your past, but God speaks to your future. You do not have to spend your life defending who you used to be. You do not have to carry labels that no longer fit. Healing is not just about changing your behavior. It is about changing your identity.
The question is not what they call you.
The question is what are you answering to?
Scripture
“Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news: ‘I have seen the Lord!’” (John 20:18)
