Mary, Mother of Jesus: The Shadow of Surrender
Mary, Mother of Jesus: The Shadow of Surrender
Luke 1:26-38
When most people think about Mary, they think about favor. They think about the angel’s announcement, the virgin birth, and the honor of becoming the mother of Jesus. What we often overlook is the tremendous cost attached to that calling.
Mary was a young woman living an ordinary life when everything changed. An angel appeared and told her that she had been chosen by God to carry the Messiah. It was a beautiful promise, but it was also a complicated assignment. Mary would have to explain a miraculous pregnancy that no one would understand. She would face suspicion, judgment, whispers, and questions. Her reputation was on the line. Her future was uncertain. Her relationship with Joseph hung in the balance.
Yet in the middle of all the uncertainty, Mary responded with one of the most powerful statements of faith in Scripture:
“I am the Lord’s servant. May your word to me be fulfilled.” (Luke 1:38)
Mary did not fully understand the plan, but she surrendered to it anyway.
As her story unfolded, surrender remained a recurring theme. She gave birth in a stable instead of a palace. She fled to Egypt to protect her child. She watched Jesus be misunderstood, rejected, and eventually crucified. She carried the weight of seeing her son suffer while knowing she could not stop it.
Mary teaches us that obedience does not always come with immediate understanding, comfort, or convenience.
The Shadow of Surrender
Surrender itself is not a shadow. It is one of the most beautiful acts of faith. The shadow appears when we resist surrender because we are trying to control outcomes that belong to God.

Many of us want God’s promises, but we want them without disruption. We want purpose, but we want certainty. We want growth, but we want guarantees.
The shadow behind control often disguises itself as responsibility, preparation, wisdom, or caution. We convince ourselves that we are simply being practical when, in reality, we are struggling to trust.
Mary’s story confronts our need to know how everything will work out before we say yes.
The truth is that some assignments require faith before clarity.
The Modern-Day Mary
Many women today are carrying something God placed in them that others do not understand.
Maybe it is a dream that seems too big.
Maybe it is a business that has not yet produced visible results.
Maybe it is a ministry, a career change, a healing journey, or a decision that requires you to walk away from what is familiar.
People may question you. Some may misunderstand your choices. Others may offer opinions about a calling they did not receive.
Like Mary, you may find yourself in a season where obedience costs more than you expected.
The modern-day Mary is often the woman who keeps showing up despite uncertainty. She continues building when she cannot yet see the outcome. She continues trusting when she does not have all the answers. She learns that faith is not the absence of fear. Faith is moving forward while fear is still asking questions.
Mary reminds us that God’s plan does not require our complete understanding. It requires our willingness.
Coach PBJ’s Final Thoughts

As I reflect on Mary’s story, I am reminded that surrender is often where transformation begins.
Many of us spend years trying to manage, control, predict, and protect every part of our lives. We carry responsibilities, expectations, and burdens that were never ours to carry. We exhaust ourselves trying to force outcomes that only God can produce.
Mary shows us another way.
She teaches us that there is strength in saying yes when you do not have all the details. There is courage in trusting God with the parts of the story you cannot see. There is peace that comes from releasing the need to control everything.
Sometimes the greatest act of faith is not doing more.
Sometimes it is surrendering more.
The question Mary’s story leaves us with is simple:
What are you still trying to control that God is asking you to trust Him with?
Reflection Question
Where in your life are you waiting for certainty before you obey?
