The Bible Is Full of Shadows… And So Are We

Shadows are not new.

They did not just show up in therapy language, coaching conversations, self help books, or emotional wellness spaces. Shadows have been present since the beginning of humanity because shadows are part of the human experience.

When I talk about shadows, I am talking about the hidden places within us. The shame we try to cover. The hurt we learned to live with. The insecurity that quietly shapes our decisions. The fears we do not always name. The trauma that taught us how to survive, but not always how to live.

A shadow can be anything inside of us that has not been fully faced, healed, understood, or brought into the light. Sometimes shadows show up as anger. Sometimes they show up as control. Sometimes they show up as silence, people pleasing, perfectionism, bitterness, comparison, pride, fear, rejection, or emotional exhaustion.

And if we are honest, we all have them.

Men have shadows. Women have shadows. Leaders have shadows. Parents have shadows. Ministers have shadows. Successful people have shadows. Strong people have shadows. People who love God have shadows.

That is why I believe the Bible is so powerful. It does not hide the humanity of people. Scripture gives us stories of people who loved God, heard from God, walked with God, and still wrestled with fear, shame, doubt, anger, insecurity, grief, jealousy, control, rejection, and pain.

The Bible is full of shadows.

Adam hid.

Eve carried shame.

Cain wrestled with jealousy.

Moses struggled with insecurity.

Elijah battled despair.

David carried desire, grief, and consequences.

Peter wrestled with fear and denial.

Martha battled distraction and performance.

Hannah carried sorrow.

Leah wrestled with rejection.

Hagar knew what it felt like to be used, unseen, and sent away.

Their stories are not just Bible stories. They are mirrors.

They help us see what we often miss in ourselves.

Over the next 30 days, I want to take us on a journey through the lives of women in the Bible. We are going to look at them as biblical archetypes, not to judge them, but to understand them. We will look at the shadows they carried, the wounds they wrestled with, the choices they made, and the ways their stories still speak to us today.

Because many of us are still wrestling with some of the same shadows.

We may not live in their time, wear their clothes, or face their exact circumstances, but we know what it feels like to be unseen. We know what it feels like to wait. We know what it feels like to compare ourselves to someone else. We know what it feels like to carry shame, hide pain, question our worth, or try to prove we are enough.

Coach PBJ Final Thoughts

This series is not about making the women of the Bible look broken.

It is about making their stories relatable.

It is about seeing that God has always worked through real people with real emotions, real wounds, real struggles, and real shadows.

And maybe as we look at them, we will begin to see ourselves.

Maybe we will recognize where we have been hiding.

Maybe we will understand why we react the way we do.

Maybe we will finally name what has been weighing us down.

And maybe, just maybe, we will give ourselves permission to heal.

Because before we can shine, we have to be willing to face what is standing in the way of our light.

Welcome to this journey.
