Why Is This Happening...Again

Why Is This Happening...Again?

There are moments in life when we find ourselves asking the same question we've asked before: "Lord, why is this happening again?" It may not be the exact same situation, but it feels familiar. The emotions are familiar. The disappointment is familiar. The waiting is familiar. Just when we thought we had moved beyond a particular season, something happens that makes us wonder if we're right back where we started.

I found myself wrestling with that very question recently. As I sat with God, I expected Him to explain why I seemed to be revisiting something I thought I had already overcome. Instead of giving me an explanation, He began changing my perspective. What if this isn't happening because I've gone backwards? What if it's happening because He's giving me an opportunity to see how much I've changed?

That thought stayed with me.

It's easy to assume that if God has taught us a lesson, we'll never face a similar situation again. But that's not how spiritual growth works. Throughout Scripture, we see men and women of faith encountering opportunities to trust God over and over again. Their circumstances weren't always new, but with each encounter, God was developing something deeper within them. Their faith was growing. Their character was maturing. Their dependence on Him was becoming stronger.

Maybe that's what's happening in our lives too.

When something familiar shows up, our first instinct is often to become discouraged. We tell ourselves, "I thought I was past this." We assume we've gone backwards or that somehow we missed God. But what if that's the wrong question? Instead of asking, "Why is this happening again?" maybe we should be asking, "Lord, what lesson am I missing?" or, "Lord, what are You teaching me through this familiar experience?" God rarely wastes an experience. If He allows us to revisit familiar ground, there's often a deeper lesson He wants us to see before He leads us forward.

A few years ago, that same challenge may have stolen your peace. Today, you pause and pray. Years ago, you may have reacted out of fear. Today, you choose to trust God. Years ago, you may have carried the entire burden yourself. Today, you're learning to place it back into God's hands. The situation may look familiar, but your response reveals that God has been doing a deeper work in you all along.

Growth isn't always measured by the absence of challenges. Sometimes it's revealed by the way we respond when those challenges come around again. The enemy wants us to believe we're stuck in a cycle. God wants us to recognize that we're walking at a different level of maturity.

The next time you find yourself asking, "Why is this happening again?" don't be so quick to assume you've gone backwards. Pause long enough to ask God what He's showing you. You may discover that this isn't the same test at all. It simply looks familiar because God is revealing the woman you are becoming.

Reflection: When you compare your response today with your response the last time you faced a similar situation, what has changed?
