Eve Hid First: The Shadow of Shame and the Fear of Being Seen

Before Eve ever hid behind the trees, shame had already entered her mind.

Genesis 2:25 says, “And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.” That matters because before shame entered the story, there was freedom. There was connection. There was no need to hide.

But in Genesis 3:7, after they ate from the tree, Scripture says their eyes were opened, they realized they were naked, and they made coverings for themselves.

That is where we see the shadow of shame.

Eve was not just hiding from God. She was hiding from herself

Shame changed the way Eve saw herself.

Her body had not suddenly changed. Her worth had not disappeared. Her value had not been erased. But shame distorted her perception of herself, and once shame entered, hiding followed.

Isn’t that what shame still does?

Shame makes people hide behind strength, success, perfection, busyness, titles, ministry, makeup, people pleasing, and performance.

Genesis 3:8 says Adam and Eve hid themselves among the trees when they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden. And then in Genesis 3:9, God asked, “Where are you?”

I do not believe God asked because He did not know. I believe He asked because He wanted them to recognize where shame had taken them.

And maybe that question still matters today.

Where are you emotionally?

Where are you mentally?

Where are you spiritually?

Where are you beneath the version of yourself everyone else sees?

For Eve, the shadow was shame.

And shame taught her to hide.

But Genesis 3:21 shows us something beautiful. Even after everything happened, God still made garments for Adam and Eve and clothed them. That reminds me that God does not abandon us in our shadows.

He still comes looking.

He still calls our name.

He still covers.

He still invites us out of hiding.

Coach PBJ Final Thoughts

I think many people have spent years hiding parts of themselves they never learned how to face.

Some hide behind silence. Some hide behind success. Some hide behind being “the strong one.” Some hide behind constantly helping everybody else while quietly neglecting themselves.

But eventually, the hiding becomes exhausting.

Eve reminds us that shame has a way of disconnecting us from ourselves long before it disconnects us from other people. That is why healing requires honesty.

We cannot heal what we continue to cover emotionally.

So maybe the question is not, “What is wrong with me?”

Maybe the question is, “Where did I learn to hide?”

Because before we can truly shine, we have to be willing to face the shadows we have been hiding behind.
